Sport political approach to cut down on social medical cost
Kim Kyung-Won

Abstract
As we know, the steady increase in social medical cost which results from chronic diseases is a great strain on the national economy. Our annual medical cost accounts for about 6% of GDP, and according to the calculation, this rate will be 26% in 2050. Physical inactivity is one of the major risk factors of chronic diseases. With their own sport policy, a considerable number of countries obtains a great success in the promotion of physical activity. Specifically, the most Western European countries have acknowledged the sport policy as the governmental welfare policy and have invest heavily in ¡¯sport for all¡¯ movement. In Switzerland and Austria, for example, sport activities contribute to reduce the medical cost. The annual economic profit is estimated to reach 444 billion won in Switzerland and 299 billion won in Austria. Although we have made an effort to promote the sport participation continuously, we can¡¯t yet be pleased with the results. In order to reduce the medical cost through physical activity, we have to make constant and great efforts not only to increase the sport budget and im-prove the sport facilities, but also to make effective public relations and cultivate the specialized sport leaders.
